There are so many drugs that can cause kidney damage that it’s quite difficult to determine the most harmful ones. Here’s a list of some of the drugs, according to their types:


Top ten drugs that cause kidney damage: 

1. Antibiotics – These include ciprofloxacin, vancomycin, methicillin, and sulfonamides.

2. Analgesics – They include acetominophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID): ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen, etc.

3. Rheumatoid arthritis drugs – These include infliximab, hydroxychloroquine, and chloroquine, which used in the treatment of malaria, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis. 

4. Heartburn drugs of the proton pump inhibitor class – They include omeprazole, lanspraole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole, and esomeprazole.

5. COX-2 inhibitors – They include celecoxib. Two drugs have been banned due to cardiovascular toxicity: valdecoxib (brand name Bextra) and rofecoxib (brand name Vioxx).

6. Antiviral drugs – These include acyclovir used to treat herpes infection, as well as indinavir and tenofovir, both of which are used in the treatment of HIV.


7. High blood pressure drugs – They include captopril (brand name Capoten).

8. Lithium – used in the treatment of bipolar disorder.

9. Anticonvulsants, – These include phenytoin and trimethadione, which are used to treat seizures and other complications.

10.Chemotherapy drugs – They include interferons, cisplatin, pamidronate, carboplatin, cyclosporine, mitomycin C, tacrolimus, quinine, and bevacizumab; as well as anti-thyroid drugs, which include propylthiouracil used to treat overactive thyroid.
